ROCK N’ ROLL PLAYING CARDS

The project was an ambitious endeavor to reimagine traditional playing cards through the prism of ‘The Legends of Rock and Roll’. Tasked with redesigning the face cards, a numerical card, and creating a unique pattern for the card backs along with custom packaging, the project aimed to pay tribute to iconic figures in rock and roll history. Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, and Colonel Tom Parker were selected to represent the King, Queen, Jack, and Joker, respectively. Utilizing high-resolution photographs and a creative process anchored in Adobe Illustrator, ProCreate and Photoshop, the project meticulously crafted a deck that not only serves as a functional set of playing cards but also as a homage to the musical legends that shaped rock and roll, complete with a thematic packaging inspired by the aesthetics of vintage cards and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

CHALLENGE

The primary challenge in creating the “3D PRINTED” magazine was sourcing and integrating high-quality articles and images that could withstand the rigors of print production while maintaining their visual appeal. This challenge was compounded by the necessity to employ Photoshop and InDesign for image enhancement and layout design, ensuring that each page and spread met high standards of typography and readability. The task demanded a meticulous attention to detail in planning the magazine’s layout, balancing text and imagery to achieve an engaging and informative read. Achieving a cohesive look and feel across diverse topics within 3D printing—spanning architecture to fashion—required a careful curation of content and creative design strategies to ensure the magazine was not only aesthetically pleasing but also rich in content.

SOLUTION

The solution to the project’s multifaceted challenges was a carefully orchestrated design process that combined artistic creativity with rigorous research. The packaging design was conceived to harmonize seamlessly with the overall aesthetic of the deck. Drawing inspiration from vintage card decks, as well as referencing posters and displays from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, the packaging maintains a consistent style that complements the thematic essence of the project. In a deliberate nod to the thematic underpinning of rock and roll, four suits were devised for the deck, each symbolizing a distinct musical era. The guitar suit pays homage to old-school rock, the saxophone suit represents soul or blues music, the peace sign suit captures the essence of psychedelic or disco decades, and the lightning bolt suit signifies punk rock. This thoughtful integration of suits adds an additional layer of thematic depth to the project, enhancing the overall narrative and visual coherence of the redesigned playing cards.
