NutriScan

Tasked with creating an app that addresses a societal issue through the lens of UI/UX design principles, our team identified a critical challenge: navigating the complexities of food allergies and the quest for healthier diets in the U.S., where approximately 32 million people suffer from food allergies. The ubiquity of ultra-processed and fast-food options, coupled with the often misleading and complex nature of food labels, exacerbates the problem. Many individuals, especially those with health conditions like Celiac disease, find it overwhelming to make safe and health-conscious food choices. Our solution, developed through the Design Thinking Phases (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, Iterate), aims to empower users to make mindful consumption choices easily and alleviate the shopping stress by enabling product scanning and detailed analysis through our app, Nutriscan.

DESIGN THINKING

CHALLENEGE

The challenge we aimed to address with Nutriscan was twofold. First, the existing
market lacked a health-focused app that allowed for both mindful consumption decisions and the creation of personalized grocery lists. Our research indicated that individuals with dietary restrictions or allergies spend a disproportionate amount of time reading labels while grocery shopping, a process that is both time-consuming and overwhelming, particularly during busy hours. This challenge was exacerbated by the limitations of existing apps, which, though offering convenience through barcode scanning, fell short in trustworthiness and personalization. Feedback from potential users revealed a significant gap in the market for an app that not only assists in identifying safe foods but also educates and personalizes the shopping experience according to individual health needs and preferences.

SOLUTION

In response to the identified needs, we developed Nutriscan, a revolutionary app designed to streamline the grocery shopping experience for those with dietary restrictions, allergies, and health-conscious individuals. Utilizing a barcode scanner, Nutriscan provides detailed analysis of food products, highlighting nutritional content, potential health risks, and harmful chemicals. Its standout feature is the ability to personalize the scanning process, allowing users to flag ingredients they wish to avoid and suggesting healthier or more affordable alternatives. Moreover, Nutriscan includes a grocery list functionality, organized by store sections, with options to invite other shoppers, fostering a collaborative shopping experience. By focusing on customization, Nutriscan not only facilitates informed decision-making but also offers an educational component, making it a tailored, user-centric solution in the health app market.
